It would be even more interesting if people really do something with it and create a few quality maps in return.

I will deal with it soon. But I have no idea for a map.
I thought perhaps to rebuild the "Wish House" (orphanage ) from "Silent Hill 4". I must still learn a lot...

Now THAT's the spirit!

As 'the boss' of this forum you should at least know how to map, it's about bloody time.
You can fire any question about mapping at me, even cluster bomb them for that matter :P

I recommend you not to start an ambicious map. Better creating small or medium maps than bigger ones. Learning and applying basic concepts should be the first thing to do.

A mistake beginners (I was one once) can make is that they want to create something that was never seen before..... but just think about it for a moment..... would there perhaps be a reason why it wasn't done before?
Things like mega humongous sized rooms, ultra amounts of sprites all over the place, super stretched walls etc etc.

Just load a couple of your favorite maps into mapedit first and examine them. Things like door sizes, texture and color usage and shading (also very important).

Don't worry about the technical stuff yet, just create some rooms, stairs, hallways, arches etc.

Yes you are right it is too ambitious......It's still a cool map idea for mapedit pros . Of course, my first maps are only simple rooms, which I will not publish . I need an idea that I enjoy .

What about the water prison from Silent Hill 4, a simple tower on a sea ? Should actually be feasible for me .

What do you think about that?

Perhaps it could work but the tower is of course surrounded by a huge sector; the sea.

Recreating from another game can be easy on the one hand since you do not have to come up with something from scratch but on the other hand you can also run into problems like limitations of the build engine or not having the right textures etc. Therefor you should be ready at all times to deviate from the original concept or you will eventually run into walls.

Don't be overly ambitious, aim for a single map with great gameplay as the core requirement. It can be inspired from retail levels in theme or design, for instance my first map will be styled around E4M1 and E6M7.
